In the field, they were wildlife - lions, leopards, elephants, hyenas. It wasn't until I returned home and began working with the photographs that something changed. Faces emerged from backgrounds. Expressions became personalities. Animals became individuals. Faces of the Mara grew from that discovery: a collection of portraits less about species and more about presence - the watchfulness, vulnerability, menace, tenderness and quiet dignity of the lives I encountered in Kenya.
