There’s a special kind of magic that comes with early mornings, especially when you’re chasing the sunrise in a place as breathtaking as Cable John Cove in Bonavista, Newfoundland. On this particular morning, I woke up in darkness, the world outside my window still shrouded in night. The excitement of what lay ahead pulled me out of bed, and I quickly gathered my gear, ready for the adventure that awaited.
The Journey Begins
As I drove out of Bonavista, the roads were quiet, illuminated only by the soft glow of my headlights. The landscape around me was a silhouette against the starry sky, a preview of the natural beauty that lay just beyond the horizon. The anticipation built with every passing moment, knowing I was heading toward a dramatic cliffside where the ocean met the land in a stunning display.
Arriving at Spillar’s Cove, I parked my car and made my way to the trailhead. The air was crisp and cool, filled with the scent of saltwater and earth. With each step along the path, I felt a sense of tranquility wash over me, the sounds of nature gradually awakening. The hike to the edge of the cliff was invigorating, the path winding through rugged terrain, dotted with wildflowers and hardy shrubs.
The Cliff’s Edge
Reaching the edge of the cliff in Cable John Cove, I was greeted by a breathtaking view. The famous sea stack known as the Chimney rose majestically from the ocean, a natural monument that stands as a testament to the power of nature. The cliffs around me dropped steeply into the churning waters below, their rugged faces bathed in the soft light of dawn.
Peering over the edge, I could see the waves crashing against the rocks, sending sprays of water into the air. The ocean was alive, a vibrant blue that contrasted beautifully with the earthy tones of the cliffs. It was a scene that felt both timeless and fleeting, a reminder of nature's ever-changing beauty.
The Moment of Sunrise
As I set up my camera, the first hints of light began to illuminate the sky. I positioned myself to capture the moment when the sun would rise over the ocean, perfectly framed between the Chimney and a massive rock outcropping. The anticipation was palpable, the world around me holding its breath in quiet expectation.
And then it happened. The sun broke free from the horizon, a brilliant orb of orange and gold that bathed everything in its warm glow. The light spread across the water, shimmering like liquid fire as it rose higher in the sky. The sight was nothing short of spectacular, a moment that felt like a gift from nature itself.
With my camera clicking away, I captured the vibrant colors reflecting off the ocean, the Chimney standing proud against the backdrop of the rising sun. Each frame was a reminder of the beauty that exists in the world and the importance of being present to witness it.
A Lasting Impression
As the sun continued its ascent, I took a moment to reflect on the experience. The early morning wake-up, the peaceful drive, the invigorating hike—all of it culminated in that singular moment of sunrise at Cable John Cove. It was a reminder of why I’m drawn to photography: to capture the fleeting beauty of nature and share it with others.
Leaving the cliff’s edge, I felt a sense of fulfillment. The sunrise had not only filled my lens with light but had also illuminated my spirit. As I made my way back, I carried with me not just the images I had captured, but the feelings of awe and wonder that come from experiencing such natural beauty.
